Gordon Brown FMedSci FRS

Gordon Brown

Joined the Board in July 2021.

Gordon Brown is the Director of the MRC Centre for Medical Mycology at the University of Exeter, and Director of the AFRICA Medical Mycology Unit at the University of Cape Town. He obtained a BSc in Microbiology and Genetics at the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa. Following a PhD at the University of Cape Town, South Africa, he undertook postdoctoral training at the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa, and then at the University of Oxford, UK, as a Wellcome Trust Travelling Fellow.

In 2004, he returned to the University of Cape Town as a Wellcome Trust Senior Fellow to establish his own research group. In 2009, he moved to the University of Aberdeen where he established the MRC Centre for Medical Mycology, and in 2019 relocated the Centre to the University of Exeter. He established the AFRICA Medical Mycology Unit in 2017. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society, Academy of Medical Sciences, Royal Society of Edinburgh and Royal Society of South Africa. He is currently a co-chair of the Wellcome Trust Science interview panel and an ad-hoc member of the MRC infection and immunity board.

His primary research interests are C-type lectin receptors and their role in homeostasis and immunity, with a particular focus on antifungal immunity.
